Designed to coordinate with my Alloy Socks pattern which was first published in the Winter 2022 issue of Spin Off magazine alongside my article Nature’s Nylon: Natural Alternatives for Stronger Socks. This is a great pattern to use up small amounts of leftover yarns.

PATTERN DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Intermediate; skills required include: provisional CO (uses very basic crochet), slip stitch colorwork & cabling slipped stitches

GAUGE in ribbing: 22 sts & 30 rnds = 4“ 10 cm, blocked
GAUGE in slipped st & cable pattern:
26.5 sts & 37 rnds = 4“10 cm, unblocked / 25 sts & 36 rnds = 4“ 10 cm, blocked

FINISHED SIZES: Child (Adult S, M, L)- Blocked hat height: 7.5 (8, 8.5, 9)“/19 (20.5, 21.5, 23) cm
Blocked hat circ at rest: 17 (19, 21, 22.75)“/43 (48, 53, 58) cm;
2“/5 cm negative ease in circumference is recommended for a comfortable fit

MATERIALS:
DK weight yarn in 4 colors (wool or wool blend yarn recommended in the same color family or adjacent color families on the color wheel); colors should provide good contrast to each other- black and white photos are an excellent tool to determine this. Shown in size Adult M: Schachenmeyer Merino Extrafine 120: 131 yards (120 meters)/50g (1.76 oz): used 111yds/42g MC (00154 jeans) and 37yds/14g of each CC (00175 limone, 00176 meergruen, 00153 enzian).
U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) 16“/40cm circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge), with either a second 16“ circular for smaller-circumference knitting at the crown or a set of double pointed needles; 2nd circular needle is needed for the provisional CO (can be 1 size smaller for CO only)
4.5 mm crochet hook & 4-5 yds smooth waste yarn for provisional cast-on
