From a distance, the stripes are solid color. As you draw nearer, the alternating bands of garter stitch and Stockinette stitch come into focus.

Starting with a garter tab, Belmont Hills grows with alternating bands of color and texture that gradually increase in width as you work towards the bottom of the shawl.

A band of eyelet mesh with a little garter stripe balances the bottom.

The finished shawl has a wingspan of 51” and a back length of 22.5” after blocking.

You will need a size US 5 (3.75mm) 32” circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge, and two removable stitch markers. While gauge is not crucial, it will affect the size of the shawl and the amount of yarn used. After blocking, the gauge in Stockinette stitch is 18 sts = 4”. You can certainly substitute a lighter or heavier weight yarn for the sport weight called for in the pattern, but it will change the size of the finished shawl and the amount of yarn used.

One skein of Studio by Loop in both the Main Color and the Contrast Color are used, or 350 yards in each color of sport weight yarn.

The skills needed for this shawl are: knit, purl, knit 2 together, ssk, and yarn over, making this an ideal project for the advanced beginner.
