This sock was designed for Super Sock Scarefest 2013.

Like the children of Midwich in Village of the Damned (1960), these socks are not as they seem. Towards the end of the movie, the main character keeps repeating that he must think of a brick wall. A brick wall leads to thoughts of ivy. The sock is a representation of ivy climbing up a brick wall.

The sock is cuff down, and is knit flat through the gusset increases. The front portion of the sock features a knit/purl texture pattern that resembles a brick wall. The “bricks” are small through the leg, but larger “bricks” are used through the gusset increases and foot. After the gusset increases are done, the stitches are put on a holder while the back leg panel is worked. The leg panel is composed of a leaf lace pattern and is attached to the main leg as it is worked. At the end of the leg, the panel yarn is broken and the remainder of the sock is worked with the main color. Gusset decreases are done along the sole.

Yarn Details
2 colors of yarn are needed. About 300 yards of red and 50 yards of green. For the red yarn, it is highly recommended that it not be a bright red or true red.

Color changes: Colors may be changed at your discretion. Both bricks and ivy come in a multitude of colors.

Gauge Notes
17 stitches to 2 inches in unstretched leg brick pattern.

Vine panel unstretched measures almost 2 inches.

Sizing
During testing, some testers found that the socks ran a little looser than anticipated, while others found the socks ran tighter. It is highly recommended that you check the tightness of the leg after a repeat or 2 of the leg brick pattern.

There are 2 gusset versions included in the pattern. The wonky gusset gives more ease, while the standard gusset fits more like a regular flap and gusset sock.
