“One of the earliest knitted items I have ever made was a black ribbed hat for my husband, Marcel. More than 10 years later, he still wears it – and reports that many of his friends have asked for its provenance.
This type of hat is known as a seaman’s hat; the accompanying scarf is also inspired by seamen’s scarves and is meant to function as a tidy layer to be worn under peacoats or sweaters. As it is not meant to loop around the neck as longer scarves do, it is almost as quick a knit as the hat.“ – Véronik Avery
CONSTRUCTION
- Scarf is worked in two halves and joined using Kitchener stitch.
- Hat is worked in the round from brim to crown.
MATERIALS
Approximately 340 (365, 380) yards of worsted weight weight wool yarn (for both items)
3 skeins of Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (100% American Targhee-Columbia wool; 140 yards/50 g)
Note: The scarf is readily knit with 2 skeins of Shelter, but the hat pushes the limit of a single skein. If making the hat only, you will require 2 skeins.

Potential yarn substitutes include Imbue Worsted. Note that put-ups (yardage per skein) may be different for alternate yarn lines, so check your total yardage for your size.
