Broken Ribcage was a way for me to break out of my colorwork addiction and try a design that was focused on one color. As a result, I knew I had texture to work with. Starting with only two stitches, This shawl grows rapidly with double yarn overs and a unique spine down the center. While switching back and forth between garter ridges and twisted ribbing, more yarn overs are added halfway through in garter stitch to increase the wingspan, creating a large, flowing design. A small section of seed stitch continues the texture, and a standard or I-cord bind off is used to the knitter’s choice, depending on how much yarn remains.

MATERIALS:
• Small (Large)
• Two Skeins of Malabrigo Sock - Pocion (three skeins of Black Trillium Merlion Sock – Brindle), or any two (three) skeins of fingering or sock yarn with yardage of 420 or greater.
• US 3 60” circular needles
• 3 stitch markers
• Tapestry needle.

MEASUREMENTS:
Width: about 68” (106”)
Height (From cast on to tip): about 20” (26”)
Gauge: (about 23 sts and 26 garter ridges = 4”)

NOTES ABOUT THE SHAWL AND LARGE SAMPLE SHOWN:
This design was originally meant to be one color, but due to shortage of yarn and extended distributor lead time to order a third skein from my usual store (plus a rush to make the shawl), I used a different colorway halfway through Section 4 to complete the sample shown in the featured photos, as well as a third color for the I-cord bind off. Three 420-yard skeins of sock or fingering yarn will be enough to make the large version and two will be enough to make the small version for a single color. Other options for the shawl in case there is not enough yarn available include multiple colors in the shawl, a contrasting color seed stitch border, or even a contrasting I cord bind off in case you feel that the yarn is shorter than the bind off requirement. As with any shawl, the knitter has a choice with the yarn they use and how.
