It’s September Scarf Season! This pattern was originally a border/edging from 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.34, no. 27 but it makes a great scarf in a bigger gauge. The only change I made was to slip the first stitch of every row for a tidier edge. This pattern makes a great edging, too.
I used 2 strands of variegated yarn. Using 2 strands helped control undesired “pooling” of the yarn’s long color changes. This scarf could easily be made wider with in a larger gauge, e.g. in U.S. #8 (5mm) needles and knitting worsted weight yarn.
FYI: this pattern requires your attention but there is help. The stitch count changes in every odd-numbered row for easier tracking. I also used a paper copy of the pattern with a ruler to cover all but the row I was working on to keep track.
The scarf is 5 inches at its widest at gauge.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, short rows and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

430 yards of Jojoland’s Melody superwash wool yarn will make 29 inches (measured at the neck edge) of this scarf at gauge. Two 220-yard skeins made the scarf pictured with several yards to spare.
