Campware Hats
These quick-knit, gender-neutral beanies have seven complementary versions to fit the whole family from babies to adults. Tell everyone’s hats apart easily by the number of stripes! They’re inspired by the “spattered” enamel mugs from cozy camping vacations.
Basic Skills Needed / Notes:
Cast on, join and work in the round (including small circumferences), knit, purl, work with two colors of yarn, change needles between rounds, knit decreases, work i-cord, and sew in ends. These and all other techniques used are explained in the pattern or through online tutorials.
-
The entire pattern is written out. Charts are provided for the crown decrease sections.
-
Estimated level: Adventurous Beginner - Intermediate.
-
Knit in the round from the rolled brim up, different decrease rates create a gathered top for the smaller sizes and a classic beanie fit for the larger ones. The smaller sizes include instructions for an integrated I-cord loop at the top, while the larger sizes have a plain finish to let the knitter pick a topper style if desired.
Finished Dimensions:
16 (16.5, 17.5, 18)(19, 20.25, 21.75)“ {40.75 (42, 44.5, 45.75)(48.25, 51.5, 55.25) cm} circumference × 6 (6.5, 7, 7.5)(8.5, 9.5, 10.75)” {15.25 (16.5, 17.75, 19)(21.5, 24.25, 27.25) cm} height, unstretched and after blocking. Meant to be worn with 1-3” (2.5 - 7.75 cm) negative ease.
Yarn:
Samples shown in Knit Picks Brava Worsted (solid colors) and Speckle (speckled colors) (100% premium acrylic, 218 yards (200 m) / 100 gr). If substituting yarn, note that the pattern gauge is tighter than usual for this yarn.
Colors shown:
- Baby hat: MC Salt & Pepper Speckle and CC Canary.
- Child hat: MC Salt & Pepper Speckle and CC Fairy Tale.
- Adult large hat: MC Salt & Pepper Speckle and CC Marina.
For more yarn suggestions (including some wool blends), see the YarnSub.com KP Brava Worsted page.
Yarn Amount Estimates
- Any hat: MC, one 218-yard (c. 200 m) skein; CC, one 218-yard (c. 200 m) skein. (More precise numbers coming soon!)
- All 7 hats: MC, c. 800 yards (c. 732 meters) total; CC, c. 218 yards (c. 200 m) total (you might want a little more, to be safe).
Needles and Notions:
- Preferred needle(s) for small-circumference knitting in the round: US size 6 (4mm), or size to obtain gauge; and US size 4 (3.5mm), or two sizes smaller than size used to obtain gauge.
- Stitch marker.
- Tapestry needle.
Gauge:
In Stockinette Stitch, knit in the round with larger (US size 6 (4 mm)) needle(s): 22 stitches and 30 rounds = 4” / 10 cm, after blocking. Please take time to save time and check your gauge.
Other Notes:
The pattern has been professionally tech edited, and the 16” (40.75 cm), 18” (45.75 cm), and 20.25” (51.5 cm) finished-circumference sizes have been tested. However, humans were involved, and an error still might have slipped by us. If you should find one, please let me know.
