This top-down semi-circular shawl features a striped body and a richly cabled edging, with stitch patterns inspired by the key spirals commonly found in Celtic and Pictish art. A picot cast-off gives an extra shot of contrasting colour.

Two sizes are given, and the shawl can be blocked to a slight crescent shape, rather than semi-circle, if preferred.

The cables are worked upon a background of reverse garter stitch, so there’s a lot of purling! The cables themselves are not too challenging and could be attempted by a beginner at closed-loop cabling.

Skill Level
Advanced beginner to intermediate. Skills required include:

• Garter tab beginning
• Basic lace
• Closed-loop cables (tutorial links included in pattern)
• Picot cast-off

Finished measurements for sizes S [L]:
Length of neck edge: 43 [56]“/(109 [142] cm)
Depth from neck to lower edge: 15.5 [20]”/(39.5 [51] cm)

Materials and Tools

• 3.75 mm/US size 5 needles (or size needed to obtain gauge; long circulars recommended)
• Cable needle
• Pins/wires for blocking

For the striped version shown

• Yarn A (main yarn): 370 [480] yds/(338 [439] m) of fingering weight yarn (shown in Eden Cottage Yarns BFL Sock, ‘Hazel’ [100% wool, 436 yds/(399 m) per 100 g])
• Yarn B (contrast yarn): 116 [150] yds/(106 [137] m) of fingering weight yarn (shown in The Yarn Yard BBFL, green [100% wool, 207 yds/(189 m) per 55 g])

For a single-colour version:

• 486 [630] yds/(444 [576] m) of fingering weight yarn
