This pullover in Shelter honors every feature of the traditional gansey. Stout chain cables boldly mark the textured yoke both fore and aft. The gentlest of A-lines makes for an easy fit, and details like the split ribbed hem and decorative side seams make Caspian both eye catching and knitterly. The front and back are worked flat with modified drop shoulders; sleeves are knit in the round to the underarm and then finished with small caps and wide ribbed saddles that ensure a trim, smart fit.
Knit Caspian in a moody blue — we used Faded Quilt — or try Fossil or Cast Iron for the perfect wear-with-anything staple: the burly motifs won’t be lost in a dark color.
Construction
The back and front are worked flat from the bottom up. The sleeves are worked circularly from the cuff to the underarm, with the shallow sleeve cap worked flat after binding off the underarm stitches. Ribbed saddles are worked from the remaining cap stitches.

Needles
Size A (for Main Fabric)
One pair of straight needles or a 32” circular needle, one 16” circular needle, and one set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size needed to obtain gauge listed
Suggested Size: 4½ mm (US 7)
Size B (for Ribbing)
One pair of straight needles or a 32” circular needle and one set of DPNs, two sizes smaller than Size A
Suggested Size: 3¾ mm (US 5)
Size C (for Tubular Cast On and Neckband)
One pair of straight needles or a 32” circular needle, one 16” circular needle, and one set of DPNs, one size smaller than Size B
Suggested Size: 3½ mm (US 4)
Knitter’s preferred style of needle may be used
32” circular needle can be used instead of DPNs if using the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round (e.g., Sleeves).
Note: If you have adjusted the needle size to obtain the correct gauge, it may or may not be necessary to make a matching adjustment to the needle size used for Tubular Cast On due to variance in individual work. You may wish to test your chosen cast-on method on your swatch.
