This shawl was knit with yarn dyed by Yoriko Oki, who also organizes the virtual fibre festival, Fibre Love Affair. I released this shawl pattern to coincide with the February 2024 show.

Yoriko has given the colourways water related names, and I used stitch patterns that reflect that watery theme. The shawl is shaped as an asymmetrical triangle, achieved by casting on a few stitches at the left-hand tip and increasing one stitch every right-side row to the opposite bound-off edge. The lighter-coloured ends in the “Tidal Pond” colourway feature simple ripple stitches, while the darker main body in the “Deep Sea” colourway is knit in a variation of the classic “Crest of the Wave” pattern. You could knit the entire shawl in one solid colour if you like; garter ridges in the pattern will effectively define the three sections of the shawl.

The techniques you will need to know--or learn--to complete this project are:

  • cast on;
  • knit and purl;
  • kfb increase;
  • yo increase;
  • k2tog decrease;
  • ssk decrease;
  • lace bind-off (explained in pattern).

“Clarksburg is a bustling little village with interesting places to visit and shop such as the old fashioned hardware store with its well worn wooden floors and a hand cranked cash register … ‘Artsburg,’ as many call it, has now become the art centre of the region with the opening of art galleries and studios.”
