Claudia's Cowl
Claudia’s Cowl
Sometime in March 2020, one of my Facebook friends shared a post of the talented singers, songwriters and storytellers, Dan and Claudia Zanes, and wrote, “If you aren’t following them, you should be.” I watched Claudia and Dan’s performance for the first time that night. They had generously embarked on their Social Isolation Song Series and offered a song every day during the pandemic! That was a few songs into the series, and I became an instant fan. Not only did they perform a different song every single day with attention to creative new set designs, but they featured a variety of instruments. They welcomed us with comforting and encouraging words.
I would usually watch and listen late at night and always felt at peace.
I felt such appreciation for this respite during the crazy uncertain shut down, that I wanted to repay them with a little something that I do from the heart. Claudia’s Cowl – a beaded moebius – and Dan’s Scarf were started as a big thank you to these two beautiful souls.
Claudia is the owner of CLEO Soaps, cleosoaps.com where she stretches her creativity even further making exceptional, handmade, all-natural soaps.
The knit, beaded moebius is a one-edged, single-sided cowl. How does this happen? Read on and travel along the curious path of the knit moebius. Beads are strung onto the yarn before the cast on and are placed between two knit or purl stitches.
The cowl is 7 1/2” deep x 55” in circumference. The gauge is 4 sts./in. 6 rounds/in.
I always use Cat Bordhi’s Moebius cast on.
Materials
Two skeins (220 yards each) of Dream in Color, Cosette,
80% Superwash merino 20% cashmere, worsted weight yarn.
Size 7 circular needles, 47” inch length.
Stitch marker. Yarn needle.
Approximately 900 TOHO 6/0 rounds.
Floss threader and beading surface.
Beads are optional, but so much fun! When knitting the moebius, you must place beads between two knit and purl stitches, where instructed, or the beads will all end up on one half of one side. Bead placement instructions are written in the pattern as PB, for Place Bead. String on one pack of beads and when they are all used up, break the yarn to string on another pack.
They are currently in the studio, recording their original compositions. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram!
