Closed Circuit Socks
Inspiration for the Closed Circuit Socks came from sketching a chart on graph paper and lo and behold, a sock was born. This design is a nod to those pursuing, working or interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and the humans that love them.
The Closed Circuit Socks pattern is a charted slip-stitch mosaic pattern consisting of an 8-stitch repeat. The sock pattern is written for toe-up socks using magic loop with an afterthought heel; however, the pattern can be converted into a cuff-down pattern knit on magic loop.
Sizes: small: 6.2 in./15.8 cm,
medium: 7.1 in/18.0 cm,
large: 8.0 in/20.3 cm
Please keep in mind that socks require a snug fit because they stretch over the course of wear, therefore you want the finished sock measurement to be less (about 0.5 in-1.0 inch less) than your measured foot circumference.
Leg length from the completion of the heel: 5 in. The length can be modified, however it will alter the yardage required for the pattern.
Yarn: fingering weight yarn. The sample was knit using a 75/25 wool-nylon blend. Testers have used yarn with varying compositions ranging from 80/20 wool-nylon blend to a Corredale blend. I used (2) 92 yd mini skeins of each color (4 mini skeins total for a total of 368 yards). This project can also make for a scrappy project as well.
Needle: US Size 1 (2.25 mm) or size needed to achieve gauge. This pattern was designed for use with magic loop, therefore a cord length of at least 32” is recommended. A 40” cable length was used in this project.
Extra materials needed: waste yarn (preferably a different color than what is being used in the project as well as a non-sticky yarn), stitch markers (optional) if you feel the need to keep track of your 8 stitch repeats in the sock pattern.
I want to thank my squad that have been more valuable beyond measure. Br94, Heather, Jackie,
Jojo, Kellie, Malinda who were awesome testknitters, my tech editor, Veronica and my photographer, Magalie both of Heart & Spirit ATL
I hope you enjoy this pattern and I look forward to seeing all of the iterations of Closed Circuit Socks. If you are on social media, please feel free to use the hashtags #highcontrastknits and #closedcircuitsocks to show off your yarn choices and finished socks.
