This was a pattern I designed while knitting abroad on my first Rowan Tree Travel Trip to Scotland in March of 2019. Since Covid changed our world, and traveling is no longer something any of us take for granted, this pattern has taken on new meaning. Getting back to the skies means we are getting back to a new normal for all of us. I present to you “Contrails and Clear Skies,” written to celebrate travel and going to all the places we know and love, along with some new destinations!

Difficulty
Intermediate - the main body of Contrails and Clear Skies is worked in two colors, a Main Color (MC) and a Contrasting Color (CC). Purl ridges in your two chosen colorways will play together to create a fun and simple shawl body. The wide knitted on border is really where all the fun is! Contrails and Clear Skies is a great knit for adventurous beginners and experienced lace knitters alike.

Construction
This shawl is knit top down with increases on both sides to create its crescent shape. When the body is finished, the stitches for Contrails and Clear Skies lace edging are cast on using a cable CO. The border is knit back and forth joining the last stitch of every RS row together with a stitch from the main body.

Yarn
This was a collaboration with TréLiz Yarns using several of her Ares Base (merino nylon sock) colorways.

Needles
This sample was knit on US size 6 using a 30 inch circular needle

Yardage
400 yards of fingering weight CC, and 800 yards of fingering weight MC. If you choose to make your shawl larger/smaller, this will alter the yarn requirements

Dimensions
The samples measured an average of 20 X 65 inches
