The Contrariwise Shawl is a large kite shaped shawl knit in a wonderful waffle stitch texture. This shawl is designed in collaboration with the Skein and the Stitch Wonderland Advent for December 2024. It is designed to be knit in a 24 colour fade, but could easily be adapted to another number of colours or just knit solid! There is a fingering and DK version of this pattern. Due to the construction of the shawl, combined with the waffle stitch, I would consider this pattern to be an Intermediate level pattern.

Size:
One size - approx. 85 inches / 212.5 cm wingspan, 23 inches / 57.5 cm depth

Note: Size may vary a bit depending on the stretch of your yarn and tension of your knitting, but it is intended to be a large, squishy shawl!
Note: The DK version does not have a sample, but has been designed to match the size of the fingering version as closely as possible. Both versions were tested.

Needles recommended:
Fingering version: 3.75 mm / US 5 / UK 9 - 40 inch / 100 cm cord or longer
DK version: 4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 - 40 inch / 100 cm cord or longer

Note: You may need other size needles to match gauge.

Gauge (blocked):
In waffle stitch pattern (see page 3), worked flat, and blocked

Fingering version: 27 sts x 40 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 20 x 20 cm
DK version: 21 sts x 31 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 20 x 20 cm

Note: Gauge is not as crucial for a shawl, but please note that if your gauge doesn’t match, the sizing of your shawl will be a bit off from the sizing listed above.

Yarn recommended:
Fingering version:
Any fingering weight yarn that you can match gauge with.
I used yarn from the Skein and the Stitch Wonderland Advent in the Plush Sock base (75% superwash merino, 25% nylon, 464 yds / 424 m per 100 g). There are 24 minis in the advent, and I have faded them throughout the shawl design.

DK version:
Any DK yarn, or fingering held double/with suri, that you can match gauge with.
I swatched and did the calculations using Merino DK (100% superwash merino, 246 yds / 225 m per 100 g). There is not a full sample completed, but the main pattern instructions follow the same as the fingering version and the sizing is based on gauge calculations.

Yardage recommended:
Fingering version:
Total yardage - approx. 265 g (1230 yds / 1125 m)
Yardage per mini (x24) - between 9 and 15 g, average of 11 g (51 yds / 47 m)

DK version:
Total yardage - approx. 410 g (1010 yds / 924 m)
Yardage per mini (x24) - between 15 and 19 g, average of 17 g (42 yds / 38 m)

Note: Yardage/weight varies between different fingering weight yarns, so if you are using yarn with a different yardage/gram ratio, make sure to calculate based on the yardage, not the weight.
