This 1871 reversible edging is from Mrs. George (Anne Jane) Cupples’ knitting booklet, published in Edinburgh, Scotland. The pattern starts with 13 stitches and slowly increases to 18 stitches, then decreases back to 13 stitches. There are 20 pattern rows but the pattern is so orderly, it’s not hard at all to work. It also works up quickly with no more than 18 stitches on the needle at any time.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, YO at beginning of row, k2tog and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
17 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of this edging at gauge.
