Durham 24-04 Handspun
This shawl was knit with yarn sent to me as part of an ongoing adventure to design with handspun wool. The Polwarth fibre was dyed in the braid with food colouring, then spun and plied into sport-weight yarn by judycollette . I chose to create a small triangular shawlette/scarf, designed to be knit sideways so that, by weighing my remaining yarn frequently, I could make the most of the available yarn. If you don’t have handspun, you can, of course, use commercial yarn. To achieve similar results to the sample, use a semi-solid or tonal, sport-weight, non-superwash yarn. The shape of the shawl, with its lace border pattern, would lend itself to yarns of different weights and fibres, and I suggest you experiment (i.e., swatch) to find your ideal match between yarn and gauge.
Specific instructions are included for making the project as pictured, as well as general instructions for making the scarf to your desired size in your chosen yarn.
The techniques you will need to know--or learn--in order to complete this project are:
- cast on and bind off;
- knit;
- kfb increase;
- yo increase;
- k2tog decrease;
- ssk decrease.
