These mittens are both simple and nifty, with their cabled thumbhole. They are crocheted in back loop only slip stitches. The cable is worked horizontally - a technique that I invented.

The pattern is intended as an introduction to horizontal cables. It has an extra extensive step-by-step picture tutorial for cabling, as well as tutorials for the back loop only slip stitch, short rows and invisible seaming.

skill level: easy to medium, depending on how familiar you are with slip stitch crochet

skills needed: how to make a chain

skills learned:

  • back loop only slip stitch
  • horizontal cables
  • short rows
  • invisible seam

yarn: about 40 g of fingering weight yarn

The model uses 31 g of Katia Darling which is a bit on the thick side of fingering.

hook: 4 mm (US size G)

also needed: darning needle for invisible seaming

The pattern is written in English.
