This basket weave stitch is such an easy-to-work, structured pattern: using only knit and purl stitches, you create beautiful three-dimensional lines. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize and after a few rows, it can become a relaxing, almost mindless knit. The ELMA shawl is worked sideways from one tip to the other, giving you the flexibility to use any yarn in any weight and gauge. For the sample, a luxurious yarn combination has been used that provides excellent stitch definition and highlights the texture of the pattern. Built-in I-cords give the edges a polished look.
The instructions are both charted and written out. You can wrap the shawl around your neck once or twice, or make a larger version to keep you warm. Don’t forget to share your project on Instagram using the hashtag #ELMAshawl!
SIZES
The ELMA shawl is designed to be worn wrapped around the neck twice and tied with a knot. But you can adjust the size to your liking and make the shawl in any size, yarn weight, gauge and matching needle size.
Finished length: 145 cm (57 inches) / finished width: 18 cm (7 inches)

Sample: 3.5–4 mm (US 4–6) with a length of at least 60 cm (24 inches)

GAUGE
Sample: 23 sts x 42 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in basket weave stitch, measured after blocking

It’s not necessary to meet the gauge, you can cast on the shawl directly with your chosen yarn and matching needle size. After a few centimeters/inches, you can wash and block or steam-block the shawl to see if you like the fabric.

It can be helpful to make a fabric/pattern swatch before you start to get used to the pattern.
