Fantail is a playful, relaxed summer tee featuring a distinctive lace motif and soft flutter sleeves. Knit in fingering weight yarn, it works especially well with blended fibers like merino with linen, cotton, bamboo, or silk. The fabric is light with gentle drape, making those special skeins shine.

Worked from the top down in the round, Fantail has a semi-cropped length that can easily be adjusted to suit your style. Twisted stitch lines framed by yarn overs create an airy fabric that feels easy to wear in warm weather.

Design Details

Fantail is designed around a stunning open lace motif that fans outward from the neckline and grows naturally as you knit. The twisted stitch lines and yarn overs create an airy, open fabric that moves beautifully and feels like summer.

The flutter sleeves are short and soft, sitting just at the shoulder for that easy, relaxed look that works over a swimsuit or with your favourite summer dress.

This is the kind of top you reach for all season light enough for warm days, pretty enough to turn heads.

Pattern Highlights

  • Lightweight fabric suited to blended summer yarns
  • Lace motif that grows naturally from the yoke
  • Adjustable length for different styling preferences
  • Clean finishing with i-cord edges and underarm detail

Construction Overview

Fantail begins with an i-cord cast on at the neckline and is worked top down in the round. The lace yoke is shaped with center double decreases and yarn overs and is worked to mid-bust before sleeve stitches are placed on hold.

The body continues in pattern, allowing approximately 2.75” for the final chart repeat before transitioning to a short section of stockinette and a ribbed hem.

Sleeves are then picked up and finished with an afterthought i-cord at the underarm and sleeve edge.

Yarn Notes

Fingering weight yarn is recommended. Blended fibers such as merino with linen, cotton, bamboo, or silk are especially well suited and create a light fabric with gentle drape.
