Whidbey Sweater is more than a DK compound raglan. It’s a blank canvas designed for a great fit first, and then a place to weave in every bit of yarn you’ve been saving.
Use fingering held double or triple, double-held DK, or single strands of worsted to create texture and color wherever you want it. After the knitting is finished and blocked, you’ll add the Whidbey Weave, letting you decide exactly how scrappy or subtle your sweater becomes.
We’ve included an illustrated guide with lots of weaving examples, and you can browse hundreds of finished Whidbeys on Instagram and Ravelry for inspiration.
The pattern includes three separate PDFs — Women’s, Men’s, and Children’s — each written with different proportions and shaping so the fit feels intentional rather than simply scaled.
Don’t forget the matching stashbuster Whidbey Bag.
Design Details
After the sweater is knit and blocked, the Whidbey Weave is added using a tapestry needle. Because the color is added afterward, you’re not locked into colorwork decisions while knitting.
You can place color wherever you want and add as much or as little weaving as you like. Different yarn weights and fibers work together easily since the weaving sits on top of the knitted fabric.
Every Whidbey ends up different depending on the yarns you choose and how densely you weave.
Pattern Highlights
- Well-fitting compound raglan shaping
- Relaxed stockinette knitting with creative finishing
- Completely stash friendly
- Customizable weaving and color placement
- Three fit styles written separately (women, men, children)
Construction Overview
Whidbey Sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down in the round.
You begin with the collar and short rows at the back of the neck. The yoke is shaped using compound raglan increases that create a curved raglan line for a comfortable fit.
After separating for sleeves, the body is worked in the round to the desired length and finished with ribbing. Sleeves are then worked in the round and finished with ribbed cuffs.
Once the sweater is complete and blocked, the Whidbey Weave is added using a tapestry needle according to the illustrated guide included in the pattern.
