I’m amazed that it took me so long to discover the book series Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. When I found it I was hooked! Outlander mainly takes place during the second part of the 18th century. In the books the characters spin their own yarn and during wintertime, both men and women are knitting their own socks. My inspiration for the socks is the Scottish argyle pattern, worked here as a structured pattern, and I have named the socks after Fergus. Fergus is such a wonderful character when he enters the plot in the second book as a 10-year-old orphan. He was born in France, but grew up in the Highlands so I imagine he would prefer delicate socks to show his French heritage and the argyle pattern in honour to his Scottish adopted family.
Sizes
X-Small (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large)
The sock’s circumference round the foot is 15 (17.5, 19.5, 21.5, 24) cm / 6 (7, 7.75, 8.75, 9.5)”, to fit foot circumferences 15-17.5 (17.5-20, 20-22.5, 22.5-25, 25-27.5) cm / 6-7 (7-8, 8-9, 9-10, 10-11)” The length of the sock is adjustable. For a good fit, make socks 2.5 cm / 1” shorter than foot length.
Yarn Options
Tréliz Apollon, 50% Superwash Merino 50% Silk 425m/100g (used for sample) Tréliz Ares, 75% Superwash Merino 25% Nylon 400m/100g (additional yarn option)
310 (340, 370, 400, 425) m / 340 (375, 410, 440, 465) yards
Note that meterage / yardage may differ depending on the length of the sock.
Gauge
On 2.25 mm / US1 needles, for both yarn options:
36 sts and 50 rnds = 10x10 cm / 4x4” in st st, 38 sts and 50 rnds = 10x10 cm / 4x4” in pattern Make sure that both row and stitch gauge is correct if you want a sock that fits well.
I am a tight knitter so you may need to go down a needle size to obtain gauge.
The socks are knit with a tight gauge to make the sock more durable. The fabric is not as stretchy as stockinette. If you have a high arch, it can be difficult to get the leg of the sock over the heel. In that case, knit one size larger or knit with a looser gauge to make it possible to get the sock over the heel.
Notions
