This cowl is part of The Fir Tree Suite, which contains matching mitts and hat.
It’s a neck warmer type cowl that hugs without constricting. And the base expands over your shoulders for extra warmth.
While one size fits most, this cowl can be sized larger or smaller simple by adding or subtracting from the 2/2 ribbing (in 4 stitch increments) along the back. It can also be shortened or lengthened to your preference by increasing the ribbing at the top and/or bottom.
This pattern calls for a light worsted weight yarn, such as Debbie Biss Cashmerino Aran, or Ella Rae Superwash Classic (used in sample pictures), to give a gauge of approximately 20 stitches for 4 inches in stockinette in the round.
The simple Fir Tree motif is done with 1/1 cables, making it suitable for someone just beginning cables.
The chart for the motif section of this cowl has completely written out line by line instructions.
