First Fit Cushion
In Shetland we have the tradition of “First Fitting”. Translated that means “First Footing” This is the act of visiting friends and neighbours after midnight on the 31st December to be the “First Foot” over the threshold to wish the occupants good luck and good wishes for the year ahead. It’s absolutely necessary to bring a gift when you’re “First Fitting” usually a peat or a dram. To come with nothing would be bad luck.
The dark Hebridean black yarn in the background of this cushion or pillow is the colour of peat and the other rich warm shades remind me of the colours you can see in the flames of a dancing peat fire.
Size
26cm W x 25cm L (10¼ x 10 inches)
Yarn
Any Shetland wool Fingering weight/4ply equivalent yarn ) in the following amounts can also be used. (also known as jumper weight yarn in Shetland)
Black - 100m
Red - 45m
Orange - 60m
Blue - 75m
Stitch marker for beginning of round (Extra stitch markers may be useful to keep track of motif repeats)
Tapestry needle to weave ends (or not! :) no one will see the inside of your cushion)
This is a great pattern for those new to colourwork or Fair Isle knitting as the finished size is not important. Buy your cushion pad or pillow once you have washed and blocked your finished cushion.
Great for using up oddments of yarn, more colours could be added.
