A walk around the Footdee – or Fittie – area of Aberdeen in Scotland on a cold, wet and windy afternoon was the starting point for this design. I was badly in need of a pair of mitts to keep my hands warm, and I imagined having a pair with extra-long cuffs that would stop the wind from whistling up my sleeves. When I got home, I sat down and designed these mitts.

They have the extra-long cuff that I wanted, and feature simple stitches and construction.

In two sizes: Medium: hand circumference 7 - 7½ in; Large: hand circumference 8 - 8½ in.

The mitts are worked in the round from the cuff downwards, and are pretty quick to do.

Gauge: 12 sts x 10 rnds = 3¼ in (8 cm) measured over hdc.

The stitches used are: chain, hdc (UK: htr) and puff stitch. Full instructions on how to work the puff stitches on the cuff are included.

The pattern comes in both US and UK terminology; just print pp 1-2 for the US version, or pp 3-4 for the UK version.
