Following Seas is the fourth pair of boots socks in my sea-themed collection. The term “following seas” goes back to the era of sailing ships. It was used with the term “fair winds.” Following seas were when the ocean currents were traveling in the same direction as the ship, giving the ship a faster speed of travel. As ships changed from sail to steam, the term went on to mean good luck in your future. The phrase “Fair Winds and Following Seas” is now used when a sailor retires from the Navy, offering them good luck in their future endeavors.
