FORAMINOSA Shawl
The Foraminosa Shawl (formerly the Bomb Pop Shawl) is a triangular colorblock shawl in a simple, staggered eyelet lace pattern using fingering/sock yarn in two eyepopping colors.
The Foraminosa Shawl is knit top down starting with a body of smooth stockinette eyelets and abruptly transitions into squishy garter stitch eyelets in a contrast color. The symmetrical, shallow triangle shape is achieved by adding yarn over increases on every row, and it’s finished with a stretchy but simple bind off.
Choose two super saturated, highly contrasting colors for a shawl that punches you right in the face, or tone it down with a more muted color palette. Either way, your Foraminosa Shawl cannot be ignored and will snag everyone’s attention!
FUN FACT: “Foraminosa” means “full of holes” in Latin!
NOTE This pattern has been fully tested and professionally tech edited (twice!) for accuracy and clarity. US knitting terminology is used throughout.
SIZE Approx. 30 in (76 cm) deep, 86 in (218 cm) wingspan
YARN Two 100g skeins of fingering/sock yarn in two different colors, approx. 800 yards (732 m)/7 oz (200 g)
When choosing yarns, raid your stash and mix and match solids, speckles, variegated, self-striping, semi-solids, tonals, and more. The simple eyelet stitch looks cool in all types of yarns!
SAMPLE SHOWN IN Hedgehog Fibres Sock (90% Merino, 10% Nylon, 437 yards per 100 g skein) in Waterlily (blue) for the stockinette body and MadelineTosh Tosh Merino Light (100% merino single ply, 420 yards per 100 g skein) in Neon Red (red) for the garter border
NOTIONS 4 ring stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors
NEEDLES US 4 (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge and US 6 (4 mm) or two sizes larger than gauge needle, for garter border and bind off
Use circular needles at least 32 in (81 cm) long to accommodate large number of stitches
GAUGE 18 sts and 37 rows = 4 in (10 cm) square in stockinette stitch knit flat on smaller needles, blocked aggressively
Gauge is not important, however different yarn/needles/gauge will affect yarn required and finished measurements
SKILLS REQUIRED flat knitting large stitch counts on circular needles, knowledge of basic knitting stitches including simple increases, garter tab cast on (video tutorial included), Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off (video tutorial included), ability to work from a chart is recommended but not required as full written instructions are provided

Errata:
In old pattern versions, the glossary definitions for m1L and m1R were reversed. There is also a mistake in the stitch count Row 4 WS of the written instructions for the Stockinette Body Set Up section, which should be 21 (not 25). Tutorial links have also been updated.
Make sure you are knitting from the most recent pattern dated 2023-04-23.
