Foxes and hares make a marvelously mismatched pair on these bright Fair Isle socks! Worked in the round from the top down, the socks incorporate short rows into the heel shaping and use simple decreases to shape the toes. Colorful bands of Fair Isle circle the upper sock and instep. A second version of the fox and hare charts are included with only two colors per row, for those who choose to use duplicate stitch to add extra colors after knitting is complete.

This pattern offers instructions for child and adult size socks, with a cuff circumference of 7.75 (9.25)” or 19.5 (23.5) cm.

This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with stranded knitting technique, long carries, and following color charts. Knitters will also use short rows, basic shaping techniques, and Kitchener Stitch technique. Since the fox and hare motifs in this pattern call for up to four colors in a row, some knitters may opt to use the duplicate stitch technique.

The gauge is 31 stitches and 32 rows over 4” (10cm) in stranded stockinette stitch, blocked.

For this pattern I used Knit Picks Stroll fingering weight yarn (75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon; 231 yards/50g). To make either the adult or child pair of socks, you will need 1 ball each of White (#26082), Dandelion (#25024), Black (#23701), Pumpkin (#23699), Jack Rabbit Heather (#25610), and Peapod (#25026). To make both pairs of socks, you will need 2 balls of White and 1 ball of all other colors.

You will also need DPNs or 32” (80cm) circular for magic loop method in size US 4 (3.5 mm) or size to obtain gauge and one size smaller than size to obtain gauge.

This pattern includes a full color chart, a two-color chart for optional duplicate stitch, written instructions, and notes on short row and Kitchener Stitch techniques.
