Franconia Hat
Named for Franconia Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, this Aran beanie features traditional cables and a textured evergreen tree motif, along with an optional contrasting pompom on top. The perfect hat for practicing basic Aran cable techniques, this design will work well in light neutrals or bright colors that show off the stitch patterns.
This pattern includes five sizes: Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult Small, and Adult Large, to fit a head circumference of 16 (17.5, 19.5, 21, 23) inches or 41 (44, 50, 53, 58) cm.
The gauge is 26 sts and 34 rows over 4” (10cm) in Franconia Chart pattern, blocked.
This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with making cables and following cable charts or written instructions. Knitters will also use basic decreases to shape the hat.
For this design I used Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport (100% US Wool, sport weight yarn, 184 yds/50g per ball). You will need 1
ball per hat, approximately 150 yds (137m) for the largest size, and less for the smaller sizes. The hat is featured here in Nature Spun Natural #NS730 (Adult Small), and Nature Spun Ash #NS720 (Adult Large).
You may substitute any sport weight yarn for this design.
You will also need approximately 20 yards (18m) of yarn in a
contrasting color (any weight will do) for the optional pompom.
You will need a 16” (40cm) circular needles and DPNs in size US 5 (3.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge.
This pattern includes cable charts as well as full written instructions, so that knitters can choose according to their preference.
