Fur Scrunchie
This pretty hair scrunchie is knitted right onto a purchased covered elastic band. Mine came from the Dollar Tree in a package of 8. It’s simple and quick and takes less than an ounce of yarn so you can make one to match any outfit, probably with the leftover yarn from the main knitting.
YARN, GAUGE, SIZE AND MACHINE
Use Lion Fun Fur or a similar yarn. Not all furry yarns knit well on machines. Look for one with a strong, slender center core, no fuzzy slubs and medium length hairs. Use maximum stitch size and every other needle on a mid-gauge or bulky machine. you may try the pattern using every third needle on a standard gauge machine but it is much easier to succeed on mid-gauge and bulky machines. No patterning or ribber is required. One size is determined by the purchased elastic but you do have some room for self expression in the degree of ruffling created.
WORKING WITH FURRY YARN
Knit slowly. Use weight generously. It may be necessary to pull down the knitting by hand after every couple of rows. The yarn fed fine through my KX350 tensioner but on some machines the tensioner provides too much pull back and it is best to skip it and manually remove the slack from the feeding yarn at the beginning of each row. When the knitting is finished, the fabric still won’t look full and fluffy. Comb with a plastic comb, a wig brush or your fingers to release the hairs from the stitches and develop the true furry character.
