Every year in spring time mom and me used to plant all the seeds, prepare flower beds, take care of the new fruit trees, you name it.
Those memories are so dear to me and keep me going when I oftentimes feel so sad and angry about what is happening where I grew up and where part of my family lives still.
Working on this pattern has offered me space to create using what is available to me, arranging colors and textures into stripes and lines and dots to resemble gardening with mom when I was little, as I remember it.
Hope you’ll enjoy making it as much as I did. And I hope it will offer you comfort, too.*
Construction
The textures of this garment remind me of planting seeds with my mom and watching the first flowers grow in our garden, all tidy and in a row. Long ago.
Garden in Spring Tee is knitted seamlessly, from the top down, both flat and in the round.
The top part is textured and contains garter stitch and 1x1 ribbing, the body is 1x1 ribbing.
This tee was designed with knitting from stash in mind and there are color changes throughout. See “yarn” for suggestions.
Materials
Yarn
For spinners: I think this would be a divine opportunity for using small amounts of handspun yarns.
For the sample I used various scraps of Fingering, DK and bulky weight yarns, a total of 9 different kinds.
Please make sure to swatch with your yarn choices in 1x1 ribbing and get the correct gauge.

Gauge in 1x1 ribbing using fingering weight yarn:
Unstretched: 28 sts and 32 rows per 4 in / 10 cm;
Stretched: 24 sts and 32 rows per 4 in / 10 cm.
Sizes: (1, 2, 3)(4, 5, 6)(7, 8, 9)
Final garment measurements at chest:
(30-33, 34-37, 38-41)(42-45, 46-49, 50-53)(54-57, 58-61, 62-65) in;
(77-84, 87-94, 97-105)(107-115, 117-125, 127-135)(138-145, 148-155, 158-166) cm.
Note about ease and picking a size: please pick a size, where your actual chest circumference is in the given range of measurements for the final garment measurement size; that way you will end up with zero to very little negative ease at chest and make sure the garment fits you well. If you are in between sizes, I recommend picking size up, not size down.
Body length: 9.5 in / 24 cm; can be customized.
Upper arm circumference of the garment:
