Glimpse of Africa poncho
I graphed 14 African animal designs which accompany detailed instructions, schematics and progress photos. My inspiration was an 8 day safari in Kenya and my graphs are taken from drawings I made from my own close up photos of these magnificent animals.
You need 2 x 200g cream and 3 x 200g black with only 100g dark orange and 50g each of light orange, both browns and four shades of grey. (Hence there are leftovers from a 200g ball unless you use your stash.)
My garment is constructed from 30 intarsia rectangles. The giraffe ear was the hardest as so many colours were on a few of the rows. The zebra stripes had 14 threads on particular rows, so you need patience. This is not a pattern for a beginner knitter, but easy construction and clear graphs ensure success if you know how to do intarsia knitting.
Once sewn together, the boatline neckline has a simple rolled collar and the edges are finished with three rows of basic crochet.
This design proved to be a show winner and was chosen to be on the front cover of Yarn magazine, Issue 39, Sept. 2015. Wearing orange or black jeans with it, I create much conversation!
