Sail Away was inspired by the classic nautical mariniere, or Breton, sweater. I’ve added some ribs and simple cables for texture, but the blue stripes remain. When the basic mariniere was adopted by the French navy in 1858, it was said that the stripes made it easier to see sailors who had fallen into the sea. I think the stripes still look fresh and are also fun to knit.
