After finishing the Seriously Twisted sweater which uses Bavarian stitch patterns worked flat, I thought it might be fun to design a basic hat with a simple Bavarian pattern as an introduction to this knitting tradition.

Note the sizing and gauge statements include the statement “slightly stretched.” This type of stitch pattern pulls in quite a bit. I did not want to wet block the hats and stretch them out. They will fit better if they can stretch to fit the head when worn. What do I mean by “slightly stretched”? I mean that one multiple of the Hatful of Eights Chart will measure 1.5”. The hats can be stretched quite a bit more.

Since I had three colors of Blue Sky Fibers Skyland, I decided to knit three samples. The Baby size is worked in Cumulus, the Child size in Crescent Moon, and Small Adult in Red Sky. (Please note that Red Sky is not colorfast.) The Small Adult size used the entire skein. If you want to make a pompom for this size, you will need an additional skein.
