Hjaltland was the Old Norse name for Shetland, and seemed a fitting name to a pair of socks designed by a Scandinavian but inspired by the Fair Isle heritage. The socks were made using Moods of Colors True Corriedale, designed for the MoC yarn club 2018, alongside designers Anna of Yarnesty and Pia of kammebornia. The socks can be worked both toe-up and cuff-down, using my favourite heel-flap-and-gusset with a short row heel turn. All required and recommended techniques are either described or linked to in the PDF.

Some practical information

  • Yarn: Either 2 or 6 colours of Moods of Colors True Corriedale.
  • Needles: 1 x DPNs or magic loop circular gauge needle sizes.

Gauge and sizes

  • Gauge ranges from 32 to 35 sts = 10cm/4”, depending on size.
  • Sizes ranges from UK 4-7 /US 6-9/Euro 36-40, depending on gauge.

In other words, gauge is important to achieve the desired size. But I don’t think swatching for socks is worth your time. So, start with the needles you think you’ll need. If choosing between two needle sizes, go with the smaller one. These socks start with the toes, and tight knit toes are sturdy toes! Measure your gauge as you go. If you are on gauge: good, if you are off gauge: either rip out or change needle size as you go.
