Holly & Ivy Gift Box (2-in-1)
This little pattern makes for a great gift box as a reusable alternative to wrapping paper or bags – just think of it like furoshiki with a bit more structure!
I love filling it with tiny treats at Christmas time and seeing it under the tree. But of course, you can also use it for gifting throughout the year or even as a trinket box to store a few special items.
The base and lid of the box are worked much like a granny square to keep the edges more sharp, but in continuous rounds. You’ll therefore need to use st markers to keep track of your st count, and you may find it helpful to place another in each corner to make them easy to find.
The st total at the end of each rnd does not include any chs or sps. You’ll be working from the base up, making the lid in the same way, and then creating the ribbon ties afterwards in a contrasting colour.
The pattern also includes an alternative to the ribbon tie – a holly and berries topper – if you prefer. These are worked separately and are sewn to the lid after.
When making the base and lid, I recommend keeping your chs relatively tight to avoid any large gaps forming.
It’s a great beginner-friendly pattern with a few techniques that might be new to you. You’ll find tutorials / photo guides and video links throughout to help you visualise what you’re making and to clarify and trickier bits.
Happy crocheting!
