The Great Basin is located in the middle of the Western United States; a large rocky area of mountains, lakes and desert, much of which lays atop my home state of Nevada. I designed this generous wrap as the namesake of this geological location. Being a desert, it is known to be very cold at night, so I switched to using an aran weight yarn for this project. Knit from the right to left tip, panels of ribbed cables sweep along the bottom half of this fully reversible shawl to echo the Sierra and Rocky Mountains surrounding the basin, while the top half is knit in seed stitch for texture and to mock the rocky nature of the land I call home.

MATERIALS:
Four skeins of The Fibre Co. Arranmore (175 yards. 80% Merino Wool/10% Cashmere/10% Silk.) Colorway – Kinnego Bay. 700 yards used.
US 10 36” circ needles
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

GAUGE AND MEASUREMENTS:
86” in wingspan, 28” from top of shawl to deepest point.
About 12 sts and 24 rows, every 4”, in ribbed cable pattern. Gauge not critical for this project.

PATTERN NOTES: Read the entire pattern before casting on to familiarize yourself with the project. This shawl is designed to use up all 700 yards of the recommended yarn, however it can be adjusted in case you fall short on yardage. A chart, as well as the written pattern, is provided. The sample shown shows 12 panels of cables in the border. This was later changed to 8 during testing.
