Indigo Shadows
This infinity cowl was designed to use equal amounts of two contrasting colors in a soft, heathery, fingering weight wool. Playing around with chart ideas, I wondered--how would some common peerie patterns look worked vertically? I worked up the charts using the exact same motifs, but varying two factors—horizontal or vertical, and then MC in dark or in light. I threw in a few stripes to balance everything out and then did a lot of knitting! I discovered in the knitting that the vertical sections work very much like colorwork stripes—the fabric pulls in far more than in the horizontal sections—so it’s important to go up 2 needle sizes for these sections—there are several reminders to do this in the pattern!
This colorwork cowl begins with a provisional cast on, is knit in the round, and is finished by grafting the two ends together, creating a long, closed tube with no wrong side.
MEASUREMENTS: One Size—8-inch width (doubled fabric) and 60-inch circumference
GAUGE: 27 sts and 28 rnds = 4”/10cm, measured over wet-blocked colorwork pattern.
NEEDLES: Choose a needle based on your preferred method of working small circumferences in the round. I used the magic-loop method and a 32-inch circular needle, but you could choose to use 2 circular needles or a 16” circular needle.
Suggested needle sizes: US 2 (2.75mm) AND US 4 (3.50mm)
YARN REQUIREMENTS: 2 contrasting skeins of fingering weight wool—Jaggerspun Heather, 100g/498 yds each—total used ~985 yards
SKILLS USED: working in the round, using a chart, 2-color colorwork, grafting (Kitchener), provisional cast-on.
I sourced this lovely yarn at The Woolly Thistle, an on-line shop specializing in woolly wool. An excellent substitute yarn for this design is The Woolly Thistle’s Rambler, an all-wool fingering weight yarn.
