As I was knitting this shawl, I was feeling a need for positive action in this insane time. That feeling spawned the idea for a series of 12 designs which I’m calling A Single Candle, referring to the idea that small positive actions can shine a light of hope and resilience, much like a single candle in the darkness. Each design will be given a name for a positive attribute, reminding us that good always prevails. To that end, I plan on donating 50% from each pattern sold to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) toward their work protecting the rights and civil liberties of all those in the United States whose rights and liberties are being denied.
This shawl is worked from the top down, beginning with an I-cord cast-on. Bands of mosaic pattern alternate with bands of stockinette while the I-cord continues along each side edge, forming the top edge of the shawl.
While this piece looks great in a pairing of solid (or semi-solid) color with a handpainted colorway, feel free to use two handpainted colorways but make sure there’s enough contrast between the two so that the mosaic pattern is visible. The swatch pictured shows Leading Men Fiber Arts Callback in colors Total Eclipse and Street Art.
