Skills used include working in the round, knitting through the back loop, crossing stitches and cabling. This is a pattern for a good intermediate knitter, or if you’d like to stretch yourself with new techniques.

I’m not a purist; I like knitting to be fun, so I’ve simplified a few of the more fiddly traditional Styrian Enns Valley techniques used. I’ve written the pattern using contemporary chart notation and alternative written instructions, making these beautiful cables more accessible to modern knitters. The rolled edges may be omitted if preferred, so that the cowl is bordered by just the ribbing.

Materials

• Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply, 100% superwash merino; 365m/399yds per 100g skein, Silver & Bronze (603) 1 x 100g skein
• 3mm/2 1/2 US needles for working in the round using your preferred method - either sets dpns, magic loop circulars with minimum 80cm/32” cable, or two sets each circulars with 60cm/24” cables.
• Cable needle
• Stitch markers

Tension
28 sts to 10cm/4” over stocking stitch (stockinette) using 3.0 mm/ 2 1/2 US needles or size required to achieve tension.

Written instructions AND charts are given for the cabled sections, so you can choose to work from either.
