Kelpie Cap was inspired by Elizabeth Zimmermann’s 
Maltese Hat (A Horde of Hats, available from 
Schoolhouse Press at schoolhousepress.com). In my 
version, the bottom garter-stitch section is shorter in 
length and lies flatter. As in the original, the garter stitch 
section is shaped with short rows. And--good 
news!---there’s no wrapping or other fancy tricks. Just 
knit the given number of stitches, turn your knitting 
around so the other side is facing, and knit back to 
the beginning. 
Hat begins on a circular needle but is worked 
back and forth in rows for the garter-stitch section. The 
crown is worked in the rnd. 
Long Tail Cast On is essential for the cast on in this 
pattern. It creates a bumpy edge that mimics a purl 
row.
