notes
Kelpie Cap was inspired by Elizabeth Zimmermann’s
Maltese Hat (A Horde of Hats, available from
Schoolhouse Press at schoolhousepress.com). In my
version, the bottom garter-stitch section is shorter in
length and lies flatter. As in the original, the garter stitch
section is shaped with short rows. And--good
news!---there’s no wrapping or other fancy tricks. Just
knit the given number of stitches, turn your knitting
around so the other side is facing, and knit back to
the beginning.
Hat begins on a circular needle but is worked
back and forth in rows for the garter-stitch section. The
crown is worked in the rnd.
Long Tail Cast On is essential for the cast on in this
pattern. It creates a bumpy edge that mimics a purl
row.
skills required
long-tail cast on, short rows, increasing, decreasing, working in the round.
