This stole pattern is a scaled up version of the classic knitted keyhole ascot. It knits up quickly on size 15 (10 mm) needles, but the large needles, ribbed pattern, and lightweight yarn (a double strand of lace weight mohair or brushed alpaca) combine to create a luscious fabric that hearkens back to the fashions of the silver screen.

This wrap can be worn as a scarf around the neck, but it also stretches in width to cover the hair as a hood. The cabled keyhole openings can simply be decorative, or they hold everything in place. You can also wear it as a stole or shawl, either draped simply over the shoulders, or with one end drawn through the keyhole on the opposite side, with the ends arranged over the shoulder or hanging down in the back.
