Kioni the Koala
The sweetest crocheted koala!
The koala parts are made in the amigurumi style of crochet, working in a continuous spiral without closing off the rounds with a slip stitch. Using a stitch marker in the first or last stitch of each round and moving it up as you work is essential to keep your place.
Fully inspired by a trip to Australia and meeting koala’s up close at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, I simply had to create my very own koala.
Materials : I used ‘Makr Cosy Wool’ (100% Australian Superwash Wool, 100g) 1 ball each in: Grey Marle, Ecru and Black. It’s a DK (8-ply) weight yarn. You can use any DK weight smooth yarns in grey, cream and black to achieve a similar effect. You can also use thinner or thicker yarn but it will result in a different sized koala.
• 3.5mm (US E/4) hook with the DK yarn (or hook size to suit your tension and chosen yarn).
• Stitch marker, toy stuffing, safety eyes (or you can sew eyes using black yarn), yarn needle, scissors.
Tension: Tension is not critical for this project although the stitches should be tight enough for the koala to hold its shape and for the stuffing not to show through. Choose a hook size that you’re comfortable with for the chosen yarn.
Measurements: The koala measures approximately 25cm (10in) in height when standing tall using DK yarn.
