I am of the opinion that crazy yarns, whether they be a long color change or wildly textured, are at their best when paired with a plain yarn. This highlights the unique and best aspects of the yarn without it being overwhelming. This sweater is designed to do just that.

I’m sure we all have those couple of skeins of art yarn from a chunky batt phase, or maybe you even have a couple of chunky batts sitting in your stash right now that you have no idea what to do with. (Even nonspinners have a couple of skeins floating around that you bought on impulse but have absolutely no idea what to do with.) This sweater is for you.

I spun the singles for this yoke sweater on a supported spindle to give me the most control over the wildly variable batts. Although ultimately I drafted primarily semi-worsted from the fold, I really just drafted however suited the batt best to get a good distribution of noil, sparkle, and wool in the singles at once. This spin was dictated by the fiber and the nature of the batt at any given place, creating a lovely textured yarn in the end. I used a suspended spindle for a regular three-ply.

The pattern calls for a standout handspun contrasting color yarn and a commercial main color. You may substitute for a wholly handspun or completely commercial cardigan if you wish.
