I haven’t made anything for my grandson yet and he is too cute for words; so it is time. I thought a little vest would be just the thing. I wanted to add some texture without making it girly so I chose a simple cable pattern for the center. And then flanked it with a twisted rib pattern. The vest is constructed from the top down in one piece with short-row shoulder shaping. The trim and bottom band can be worked in a contrast color as shown are worked in the same color as the body.

Sizes:
3 m (6 m, 12 m, 18 m, 24 m, 2, 3, 4)
Finished chest: 16.25 (17.25, 18, 19, 19.75, 20.75, 21.5, 22.25)“.
Materials:
Yarn: Crystal Palace Merino 5, 100% superwash merino wool; 110 yds per 50g skein; MC: #5234 dove gray, 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4) skeins, 170 (194, 220, 247, 284, 306, 344, 395) yds. CC: #5239 dark chocolate, 1 skein, 60 (63, 66, 69, 73, 75, 79, 84) yds.
Needles: Size6/4mm 24” (or longer) circular needle and set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles. needles.
Other: Stitch markers in different colors, stitch holders, locking marker or safety pin, cable needle, waste yarn for provisional cast-on, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4” in Stockinette Stitch. 28 sts and 28 rows = 4” in Twisted Rib and Side Rib Patterns. Center Cable Pattern = 2.75” wide.

Notes:
This vest is constructed from the top down in one piece with short-row shoulder shaping. The first rows of the back and front with the short rows can seem complicated, but then the stitch pattern becomes familiar and the work moves along smoothly. The different cable patterns are worked in sections marked with stitch markers. The Side Rib pattern is worked from stitches added during armhole shaping and is also marked with stitch markers. I recommend using different colored markers.
