Maelstrom Scarf
A super duper bulky (Jumbo) scarf.
Designed for yarns at 2 - 3 WPI, but looks great with other yarn/ needle combos, and a short cowl length version is included as well.
Worked flat bottom up.
Charted and written pattern using American English knitting terms and abbreviations - glossary provided.
US and Metric measurements
Overview
A fast and fun knit, with elegant results.
Scrolling lace ‘Eye of the Storm’ stitch body, edged with opposing Right/Left (2 stitch) twist cables, and slip stitch selvages.
Pattern uses twisted stitches (K and P thru back loops), twisted decreases and YOs. Instructions given for construction of all stitches.
There is patterning on both sides - but it is an easy to knit, and remember, 6 row repeat.
Piece requires blocking.
Yarn
Up to 270 yards (247 m) super bulky yarn @ 2 -3 WPI
~ Gray full length sample = Schulana Cortina (4.5 balls/250 yds/225 m).
~ Purple Multi-colored, cowl length sample = Malabrigo Rasta in Zarzamora (1 hank/90 yds/82 m)
Recommend using a high animal fiber content yarn for memory.
Tools
US 15 or 17 (10 or 12.75 mm) needles
Row counter
Cable needle (optional: for 2 st R/L twist cables - instruction given for shortcut w/o)
Blocking surface
T-pins or blocking wires
Tapestry needle (wide eye) to sew tails
Measurements
Grey (Schulana Cortina) full length sample measures:
7.25 by 82” (18.5 cm by 206 cm)
Purple multi-color (Malabrigo Rasta) cowl length sample measures:
8 by 29.5” (20 cm by 73 cm)
~this cowl is simply a short version of the scarf - pinned or buttoned. Cowl closure ideas and directions for anywhere buttons included in pattern.
Easily modified for length.
Gauge
Not critical, but will affect yardage and size.
Samples both used US 17 (12.75 mm) needles, with yarns from 2 - 3 WPI, but I knit tightly - you may want to start with US 15 (10 mm) needles if you don’t ~ or if you are using smaller yarn.
Sample gauges
Gray (Schulana @ 3 WPI) in stockinette, as knit/no block
9.5 sts by 12 rows = 4” (10 cm) square.
Purple multi (Rasta @ 2.25 WPI) in stockinette, as knit/no block
8.75 sts by 10.75 rows = 4” (10 cm) square.
The design works nicely with different gauges/yarn weights.
Adjust needle size according to your taste, desired look and chosen yarn.
A big thank you to the lovely testers of Maelstom in the FPT group.
