This insertion/afghan strip is heavily modified from 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.7. The original pattern had 2 repeats side by side resulting in a long string of instructions. I reworked Weldon’s pattern to one repeat with extra lace stitches in the borders. The strip is 2.75 stitches wide at gauge and has a 6-row repeat. Every row is a “fancy” row.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, p2tog, S2KP and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

40 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of Maltese Stripe II at gauge.
