Maud
This pattern is currently only available as part of The Knitting Salon Yarn and Pattern Club 2022.
Maud is an elegant, moebius style cowl, worked in an all-over colourwork pattern inspired by the decorative end papers found in the book, No Surrender by Constance Maud, first published in 1911 and re-printed by Persephone Books. The end papers are a reproduction of an original textile piece by the Omega Workshop from 1913, entitled ‘Mechtilde’ which was block-printed on linen and used the colours of the British suffragette movement.
Maud is knitted in the round commencing with a provisional cast-on and is completed by grafting the two ends together to create a continuous loop. A 180 degree twist is added prior to the graft being worked to add the modern, moebius element to the design.
The pattern uses four colours including the three colour of the Suffragette movement - purple, green and white, paired with a soft, stone shade to represent the Lancashire mills of the Victorian age.
The pattern also includes instructions for an alternative vintage-esque neck warmer using the same beautiful colourwork pattern. The muffler is knitted in the round but is not joined into a loop but is finished with tassels at each end of its length.
