Meandros
These socks were inspired by my trip to Greece for a knitting retreat in Rhodes. I designed these as a way of coming down from the Hellenic high, using yarn hand dyed by Greek yarn dyer TréLiz. The socks are worked toe-up, and works well for beginners to this sock-knitting method, as the toe itself is pure stockinette. I have incorporated my favourite kind of heel, which is half a German Short-Rows heel and half heel-flap and gusset. Finally, the sock rounds off with an elegant folded hem cuff that is sewn onto the inside of the leg. All required and recommended techniques are either described or linked to in the PDF.
I hope you will enjoy this pattern, and if you need any help or have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me on Ravelry! The group ‘Skeindeer Knits’ is the best place for support. Happy knitting!
Some practical information
- Yarn: 50 grams each of TréLiz Ares ‘Outlander’ and ‘Fuchacino’ or any sock yarn of your choice.
- Needles: 1 x DPNs or magic loop circular gauge needle sizes.
Gauge and sizes
- Gauge ranges from 32 to 35 sts = 10cm/4”, depending on size.
- Sizes ranges from UK 4-7 /US 6-9/Euro 36-40, depending on gauge.
In other words, gauge is important to achieve the desired size. But I don’t think swatching for socks is worth your time. So, start with the needles you think you’ll need. If choosing between two needle sizes, go with the smaller one. These socks start with the toes, and tight knit toes are sturdy toes! Measure your gauge as you go. If you are on gauge: good, if you are off gauge: either rip out or change needle size as you go.
