Melba Tones
The pattern for this sweater accompanies the Skill Building article on the three-needle bind off. (This technique is used for the shoulder seams.) The sweater is knit flat with modified drop shoulders. The neckband is a shawl collar with short-row shaping. When selecting a size, check the chest measurement and decide how much ease you would like.
Someone once asked me what inspired my designs. It is never just one thing. Sometimes it is the yarn, sometimes a stitch pattern, sometimes a silhouette I’ve seen on a mannequin in a designer store. This time it was definitely the yarn. Brooklyn Tweed released Tones in two weights last fall. There are two shades for each color—one bright and the other deeper and subdued. I wanted to try this yarn and felt it would be perfect for the technique of single stripes using just two colors. I chose the fingering weight as I imagined wearing this on those colder days in early spring. The bands and collar use the undertone color. Reversing this might make the sweater a bit more springlike.
